Can you read this?

I saw a very funny and tragically stupid sign today while sitting in the drive-thru at Burger King. It read…

“Picture menus available at window”

So… let’s explore this a little bit with real-life scenarios:

1) Let’s assume that I cannot read. If I cannot read, then I probably cannot drive and probably would not be in the drive thru to see the sign. Oh wait… you probably don’t need to be able to read to drive. Bad example, I know.

2) Let’s assume that I cannot read or drive and that I decide to WALK through the drive-thru (since I can’t read and probably don’t know that the drive-thru is only meant for cars — I couldn’t read THAT sign either). I suppose that I have miraculously memorized the strange arrangement of unknown symbols (letters) that tell me I can get a selection list from the window ahead. Fair enough.

3) Suppose that I cannot read and find someone who tells me what the sign says. That would work! But why wouldn’t I just describe to them what I wanted to eat and they could tell me if it was on the menu or not. I would probably just wander up to the counter and point at some of the pictures on the menu anyway instead of involving some innocent bystander in my dillemma.

4) Maybe I cannot read AND I am deaf. Well, that eliminates the need for the sign and the innocent bystander AND the cashier at the counter. On to ridiculous scenario five in make believe world…

5) I could be illiterate, deaf and blind. That would put me in a real pickle. I probably wouldn’t be aware enough to realize I was IN a Burger King or even be able to get there of my own will anyway, let alone tell where the stupid sign, entrance door, counter OR cashier was located. Then I would really be screwed.

Ok, I admit it… I give up! Just who is that sign there for and how much extra did that sign add to the cost of my burger?
